8 million Turkish women illiterate
Thursday, March 8, 2007
IZMIR - Turkish Daily News
Ege University Research and Application Center of Women Problems (EKAM)
Director Nurselen Toygar said that there were around 8 million illiterate
Turkish women.
Toygar said, "Beside these 8 million illiterate women, 640,000 girls are not
going to school in Turkey. Only 3 percent of women receive university
educations. On the other hand Turkey is ranked 165 in the list of countries
where women are represented in the best way." Stating that during Ataturk's
term, the number of women parliamentarians was much higher than today,
Toygar said, "There are only 24 women parliamentarians and only one woman
minister." Stating that 57 percent of Turkish women have been subjected to
violence in the first days of their marriage, Taygar said that almost 90
percent of violence in the family was subjected to women. "Despite the law
enacted to protect women, there is still violence against women in Turkey.
This means that enacting some laws is not enough to protect women, for that
reason these laws should be implemented. It is a pity that 9 percent of
Turkish women accepted the violence against them as normal and feel they do
not need to complain about it. This also shows that there is a lot of
unknown violence case against women," said Toygar. Toygar, stressing that
everybody should do their best to solve women's problem, said "For women to
get their place they deserve in society, everybody should do their homework.
Especially the state should cooperate with universities and nongovernmental
organizations to show women how to fish, in order to get their economical
power, which seems to be the only solution for women's problem."
Women General Assembly in March:
Toygar said that they would organize a Women General Assembly with the
attendance of 30 academicians from Ege University, Izmir Economy University,
Yasar University and Dokuz Eylul University by the end of March. Toygar said
that at the end of this general assembly, they would prepare a report about
women's situation in education, law, economy and politics. Toygar added that
they would organize the second Women Movies Festival between March 12 and
14.
Four new women shelters in Izmir:
Izmir Metropolitan Municipality also announced that four new women shelters
would be opened. Due to the outcome of a conference named "Now, women talk"
organized by the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, Mayor Aziz Kocaoglu
announced that they would open four new women shelters in the city. Kocaoglu
said, "We have organized this conference on the occasion of International
Women Day. After receiving the demands from attendees, we decided to open
four women shelters which will host women who are subjected to violence or
impoverished." |

I would gladly review a survey on how many illeterates there are just
in the Unites States.
I am sure it would far surpass 8 million.
