FINALLY....somebody with some balls comes along, I just hope that
there are enough people like this guy who share his desire for a new
vision and a new way of using energy.
GOD KNOWS that there are plenty of folks who HATE green technologies,
because that's not where their money is parked at the moment.
Here's the problem that has confronted implementation of green
technology.
[1] Stupid, idiotic and facist-centric ZONING laws which exist at the
community level which make it illegal to install wind turbines and
solar collectors.
[2] Backward headed BUILDING CODES which make things difficult, cost
prohibitive, and difficult to install without jumping through
impossible hoops for the city code enforcement police, and yes they
carry guns.
[3] Crazy boneheaded LICENSING requirements which seem to assume that
Americans are too stupid to screw bolts together without first having
a 4 year degree from a trade school.
Just these 3 things alone - if you can eliminate these hurdles, then
implementation of proven green technology solutions can proceed
without the FRICTION that would normally be caused by CITY HALL. |

Since you asked, it is because our planet is not a simulation. If we
wreck it then we all die. The same can be said of the economy, with
gas prices diverging to infinity. So, it makes sense to elicit as much
discussion as possible because apparently the guy is trying to push
his plan.
I lived through the 70's and saw this movement die once due to social
indifference. Today, the polar icecaps are melting. What next ?
Math and physics _has_ to be about more then just being clever and
getting pretty prizes. The guy (Pickens) is asking for people to come
together peacefully and I hope that people will support his effort and
put enough pressure on their local governments to allow society to
change how it uses energy.
I'd put a giant solar water heater in my yard today, I would start
building right now. But the only thing that stops me is the fact that
the Building Inspector and the "Code Enforcement Police" will not
allow it. Technology does no good if government has banned you from
using it, and that is what Mr. Pickens needs to know, and that is what
people need to solve.
I posted to sci.math because I dont believe in going down without a
fight, just the kinda guy I am. I lived through the 70's and dont want
to see a rerun of the decade of complacency. Or maybe I'm a crazyass.
Pick one. |

You haven't said anything that seems crazy (unless I just didn't read
closely enough!), just off-topic.
I'm not jumping on you like some Judge Dredd character insisting that
all off-topic postings are wrong and evil! But posting from out of
the blue to any old forum on any old subject you feel strongly about
... just does seem ... well, wrong. :-)
(Seriously, where's the context for this? Off-topic postings often
seem OK, to me at least, when there's a context. But this one just
seems intrusive.)

You're right, it was rude of me. I apologize for that.
But I hope that people who are working on these problems can realize
that even though we are sitting on 150 years worth of technology which
is easily sufficient to solve the problem, that all of that
achievement is a complete and total waste if society does not
implement the technologies. And, the primary thing which stands in the
way is not cost or human willpower, but silly laws and men with badges
who enforce zoning regulations and building codes. That is my view of
the problem, and it does seem frustrating that so many things are
placed in peril because people do not have the ability to vote on
these things. Zoning laws and building codes are simply imposed upon
the people by committee.
To think that all of agriculture might be disrupted, oceanic currents
will probably be altered, species will be threatened, and all because
of a "committee". This, in a Democracy, where the problem is
recognized and the technology exists to fix it. Does that not strike
you as odd ?
Science should solve problems. If you have a solution to a huge
problem which is simply not implemented, then science is reduced to an
exercise in insanity.
I'l keep my socio-political blathering off of sci.math to be polite,
but I think it is important to recognize what the problem is right
from the start, since there is now a very public appeal for people to
solve this issue. Zoning, building codes, committees and City Hall.
That is the problem as I see it. FWIW. |

Just to comment on my point about the stupidity of committees and the
incompetence of City Hall, we have a story from Ohio where they are
imprisoning people who fail to mow their grass. Particularly stupid
because grass removes CO2 from the atmosphere, and lawn mower engines
are filthy polluting little nuisances which emit lots of CO2. So you
have this LAW which says that you MUST KILL plants, and you MUST EMIT
CO2 "by Law", otherwise you go to jail. Not just a fine, but jail.
Prison. And soon it will cost you $10 per gallon to kill those plants,
but you MUST do it, or go to jail.
That is what is threatening the environment. Human stupidity.

Ohio City Passes Jail Time for Long Lawns
The new law ups a second high-grass citation to a fourth-degree
misdemeanor, which could result in a fine and up to 30 days in jail. |
