SNIP....

Of course. The expression means "north, east, south, west" indicating
the whole Earth which presupposes roundness.

Why wouldn't "north east south and west also apply to a flat Earth?

Because Bush was referencing the Bible. (although there no reason to assume
that W knows the earth is round) There's no evidence that the Bible
writers knew the Earth was round.

Surely you are not saying that Bush believes the Earth to be flat? Of
course the phrase "four corners of the Earth" simply means
everywhere----north, east, south and west. Of course you are acting
like you do not understand, that is, a person who presumably graduated
from college, who presumably understands complicated scientific
jargon, computer jargon, and most common expressions of figurative
speech, but you do not suddenly understand what "four corners of the
Earth" means? Of course you are an ordinary Atheist "interpreting" the
Bible to make it look silly.

"Corners", Ray.  That's the word used *in the Bible*, Ray.  Are you
saying the Bible can't be taken literally?  Are you saying the word of
God is figurative?  If you do... well, that way lies heresy.

This comment defines "literally" to mean "without intelligent common
sense comprehension." It also presupposes "figurative" to not be
communicating truth corresponding to reality by figurative speech.

Okay, Ray, answer a simple question and I'll stop calling you a heretic.

Is the "four corners of the Earth" in the Bible a figure of speech?

Of course. The expression means "north, east, south, west" indicating

North, east, south, west implies Cartesian coordinates. That is, a
flat, two-dimensional surface.

Bush is an idiot.

"It seems to me, and many other greater minds, that 6000 years is
plenty old enough. When you start trying to reach beyond acceptable
limits, you're only going to start scaring folks." He went on to
suggest that scientific grants and funding be determined by a sliding
scale of "scriptural congruence".

Don't post anything more stupid that necessary. The four
cardinal directions apply just as well to a flat map on a
flat table as they do to a round Earth; actually, even
better, since there's no ambiguity at the "edges".

But a more basic point is, who determines which parts of the
Bible are literal and which are not? You?

Dag nabbit, I seem to have missed Ray's reply. But Bob's m/y/
/u/n/c/l/e/ post got exactly the point I intended to make, which is that
if one phrase in the Bible is not literal, then others can be.

Of course, now Ray's not a heretic. We'll have to live with that
somehow.

Thanks --

Now I finally understand it all: the dinosaurs and all the
so-called extinct species - they were left behind by Noah. But he
must have been a master at insect collecting. The millions of
insects, beetles, spiders - he really brought all of them with him
on the ark? (probably just eggs;-)

How do you determine if an egg is a male or female?

I think the way that Bill Cosby as Noah solved the problem when he
found he had two male hippos or some other large animals. Ask god to
make sure.

IIRC, the exchange was:

"You've got two males; you need a male and a female. Take
one of them back."

"I'm not takin' nothin' back; you change one of 'em!"

"C'mon, you know I don't work that way!"

Years ago when service stations gave out prizes for buying gas they
had a Noah's Ark you could buy and every time you filled up you got
a pair of animals.

I got a pair of frogs one day and my girl friend asked that same
question. She turned them over and said "Oh"...
Seems there was a little oblong bump where a mammals penis would be.

That's bizarre. How could you tell it wasn't intended as a
pudenda, a la Barbie?

It might have and I don't remember looking at any other of the creatures.

Probably just as well... ;-)

Everybody who believes in a literal bible makes this decision for
themselves.
There are several different "schools" as to why they are right and everybody
else wrong. Most claim they are guided by god and none will answer the
question as to why a god woould tell different stories to different people.
