Climate change will impact US national security

WASHINGTON (AFP) — Climate change will have sweeping consequences for US
national security by 2030 aggravating global poverty and destabilizing
fragile countries, a US intelligence report said Wednesday.
"We judge global climate change will have wide-ranging implications for
US national security interests over the next 20 years," Thomas Fingar,
deputy director of National Intelligence for Analysis, told US lawmakers.

A surgical revolution: checklist that could prevent thousands of deaths

An aircraft-style safety test is to be implemented in all British
hospitals to reduce the risks of surgery, using a simple checklist that
has been proved to save thousands of lives.
Surgeons and nurses will run through the checks before each operation in
the same way that pilots check their aircraft before take-off. In
Michigan, a similar checklist to reduce hospital infections is estimated
to have saved 1,500 lives in the first 18 months.

More offshore drilling does little at the pump: EIA

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Allowing oil drilling in U.S. offshore waters
that are now closed to energy exploration would do little to lower
gasoline prices paid by consumers, the government's top energy
forecaster said on Wednesday.
In response to record pump prices, Republican presidential candidate
Sen. John McCain and President George W. Bush this month called for
Congress to end its moratorium on drilling off the East and West coasts
and in Florida waters, leaving it up to each affected state to decide
where to permit drilling.

Iran issues warning over nuclear program

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) -- Iran's parliament speaker warned the West on
Wednesday that it may face "a done deal" if it provokes Iran, a stern
hint that Tehran could build nuclear weapons if attacked.
The speaker, Ali Larijani, who was once Iran's top nuclear negotiator,
also warned that a "short opportunity is left" for a deal with Iran over
its nuclear program, which the U.S. and some of its allies fear is aimed
at producing a bomb.

Exxon Valdez $2.5 billion oil spill ruling overturned

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday overturned
the record $2.5 billion in punitive damages that Exxon Mobil Corp had
been ordered to pay for the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill off Alaska.
The nation's highest court ruled that the punitive damages should be
limited to an amount equal to the total relevant compensatory damages of
$507.5 million.
