http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/2008/may/12/peopleinscience.religion
for instance.

"Childish superstition: Einstein's letter makes view of religion
relatively clear"
....
"Einstein penned the letter on January 3 1954 to the philosopher Eric
Gutkind who had sent him a copy of his book Choose Life: The Biblical
Call to Revolt. The letter went on public sale a year later and has
remained in private hands ever since."
Philosophers are all the same Smile (And maybe the book didn't go so
well. You wouldn't put these quotes on the dust jacket, would you!*)

Now the letter is up for auction in London - presumably the present
owner considers eBay crass?

I believe that some Einstein quotes are fakes, particularly on
religion - I've brought it up here before - and others are
translations from German and liable to come in different versions.
For that matter, if Einstein spoke English then he was probably half
translating from German himself in doing so.

* In this case:

"The word god is for me nothing more than the expression and product
of human weaknesses, the Bible a collection of honourable, but still
primitive legends which are nevertheless pretty childish. No
interpretation no matter how subtle can (for me) change this."

Radio reports, some heard in a rather sleepy state, had me trying to
figure out whether Einstein was saying that bible stories are childish
and pretty, like fairy-tales. And yet I'd suppose that the German
expressions for "pretty childish" and "pretty, childish" are quite
different, if you see what I mean - ?

Since Einstein has been dead around 50 years, that he's still an atheist is
quite surprising.

One would think that either he'd long since ceased to believe anything, or
that he'd have switched to whatever sort of theism that his experience in
the afterlife supported.

I guess this proves the bible-thumpers are right. Atheists know God exist,
and willfully deny him.

He does not exist; therefore he cannot lack a belief in the gods.

The existence of an afterlife does not necessitate the existence of a
god or gods. The Pearly Gates may *appear* designed, but we all know of
naturally occurring hinges.

Or in this case, preternaturally occurring hinges.

But not us agnostics. We'd prefer not to know.
